Starting Hourly Rate Range: $22.67 - $26.67, depending on qualifications.
The Normal Public Library is accepting applications for a 30-hour/week part-time customer service staff member.
The Library Technical Assistant provides excellent customer service, runs library programs, and works in the library’s makerspace. The person in this position must be creative, innovative, tech-savvy, and team-oriented. Reports to the Programming and Youth Services Manager. Duties/Essential Job Functions

- Provide exceptional customer service in-person and over the phone
- Create and maintain the daily service point schedule for the library’s second floor
- Present and aid in the development of library programs for all ages.
- Assist customers via readers’ advisory, reference, and technology
- Shelve library materials
- Train and support library assistants
- Assist customers with technology in the library makerspace
- Serve as a part of the team providing the library’s 3D printing service
- Maintains library collection by identifying and solving problems with library materials; performs cleaning of library materials; processes withdrawn and donated materials; pulls materials from the shelves for review by staff based on criteria such as condition, age, and frequency of use; maintains customer reserve shelves; and processes various reports which involve searching for library materials.
- Create positive experiences for library patrons by effectively and efficiently performing job tasks; present a positive image of the library in attitude, communications, and appearance while performing duties in both the public and staff areas
- Demonstrate professional, positive, cooperative, team-oriented working relationships
- Serve on library committees and working groups
- Demonstrates a shared commitment to sustainable workplace and professional practices
- Perform other work duties as assigned, relative to the operational needs of the library
Required Knowledge, Skill and Abilities

- High school diploma or G.E.D. or higher degree preferred
- 1 year of relevant library experience
- Demonstrated understanding and appreciation of diversity and the importance of inclusion as shown by a commitment to apply and incorporate the differences, complexities, and opportunities that diversity brings to an organization
- Ability to express oneself effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Knowledge of Internet and database services
- Ability to pass alphabetic and numeric sorting and filing test
- Ability to operate library technology including personal computer, email, software programs (i.e. Windows/Microsoft Office) and other job related equipment and systems
- Ability to utilize reliable transportation to promptly report to job assignment and other locations, per job requirements
- Knowledge of library services
- Willingness to administer, explore, and develop new library services and/or projects as directed
- Willingness and ability to learn about new and emerging technologies
- Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers
- Ability to create and maintain a positive work environment

- Physical ability to perform a variety of tasks in a wide variety of situations including working with large groups of people and lifting books on a regular basis
- Ability to work regular schedule reliably at no less than 30 hours per week

Due to the security clearance required to successfully perform these duties at the required library, candidates must be able to pass a comprehensive background check at the time that a conditional offer of employment is made.

The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety
precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, libraries, and
residences or commercial vehicles (e.g., use of safe workplace practices with office
equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and traffic
signals, and/or working in moderate outdoor weather conditions).
Work requires occasional lifting or pushing of up to 50 lbs and the frequent lifting or pushing of up to 25 lbs, as well as frequent bending and squatting to access low shelves.
