Job Description

Normal Public Library seeks a creative, innovative, tech-savvy, team-oriented librarian to join an outstanding team dedicated to providing excellent services and programs to all in our community.

Duties/Essential Job Functions

  • Develop, plan, and present innovative programs for all ages
  • Coordinate the library’s Partners in Reading program, which brings young adult volunteers into the library to work with school age patrons on literacy skills and developing a love of reading
  • Assist customers via readers’ advisory, reference, and technology
  • Work with colleagues to analyze existing programs, services, and community trends, to identify the needs and interests of diverse communities
  • Assess library resources, services, and technology
  • Supervise staff as assigned in the absence of a supervisor
  • Serve on library committees
  • Create positive experiences for library patrons by effectively and efficiently performing job tasks; present a positive image of the library in attitude, communications, and appearance while performing duties in both the public and staff areas
  • Demonstrate professional, positive, cooperative, team-oriented working relationships
  • Provide direct service at service desks
  • Perform other work duties as assigned, relative to the operational needs of the library
  • There is potential for the person in this position to work in the library’s makerspace, assisting patrons with use of the maker technology during drop-in hours and/or through the development and implementation of programs. This is not, however, considered an essential function of this role.

Required Knowledge, Skill and Abilities

  • MLS from an ALA-accredited graduate program
  • Proven experience in learning, implementing, and teaching new technologies
  • Proven experience in library programming
  • Proven experience providing reader's advisory and customer service in a library setting
  • Willingness and courage to explore new ideas and developments in the profession, create, and innovate
  • Demonstrated understanding and appreciation of diversity and the importance of inclusion as shown by a commitment to apply and incorporate the differences, complexities, and opportunities that diversity brings to an organization
  • Strong commitment to public service
  • Demonstrated ability to interact harmoniously and communicate well with customers and staff
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations of all ages
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing situations and to varied work schedules
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills; public speaking presentation skills
  • Physical ability to perform a variety of tasks in a wide variety of situations including working with large groups of people, bending, and lifting materials on a regular basis
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record/history
