Job Description
The starting pay for this position is $65,767 to $77,375 depending on qualifications. The full pay range is $65,765 to $104,594.
The Public Works Department provides a diverse range of services through Public Works Administration and four operating divisions. Public Works responsibilities are primarily related to public infrastructure and environmental services.
The Vehicle/Heavy Equipment Mechanic performs skilled work in the repair and maintenance of automotive equipment, truck equipment, and construction equipment. An employee in this position is responsible for the performance of skilled automotive and truck repair and maintenance work on gasoline, diesel and related equipment; mechanical repairs to equipment components; and execution of highly technical aspects of work. Assignments include the preparation of maintenance work records and reports. Work requires broad experience on light and heavy automotive and truck repair and maintenance jobs. Assignments are performed under direct supervision of the Fleet Supervisor and are reviewed through incidental inspections, reports prepared and maintained, and observation of the results obtained.Duties/Essential Job Functions

- Diagnoses and determines the maintenance and repair requirements of gasoline and diesel equipment.
- Assists in maintaining equipment repair and maintenance records on all assigned vehicles.
- Performs road testing of equipment to verify completeness of work and correct operation.
- Performs complex hydraulic work and limited welding.
- Performs work as required by preventative maintenance program.
- Is available for emergency work 24 hours a day, on call.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skill and Abilities

- Thorough knowledge of practices, methods, tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of light and heavy, gasoline and diesel automotive and truck equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of the operating principles and standards of gasoline and diesel engines.
- Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and safety precautions necessary in automotive and truck mechanic trade work.
- Considerable knowledge of the operating and maintenance standards of automotive, truck and auxiliary equipment.
- Skill in electronic diagnosis and repair.
- Skill in air conditioning and refrigeration maintenance and repair.
- Skill in the care and use of manual and power mechanic tools and equipment.
- Ability to obtain and maintain certification as an A/C and Refrigeration Technician.
- Ability to weld.
- Ability to diagnose defects in automotive and truck equipment and to determine repair requirements.
- Ability to maintain standard equipment maintenance and work records.
- Must possess the ability to deal positively and effectively with fellow employees, officials, and the general public.
- Must possess and maintain a class B commercial driver's license.
Desirable Training and Experience
Graduation from a standard high school or equivalent, supplemented by an approved apprenticeship or training in automotive and truck repair work or graduation from a vocational school in automotive and truck maintenance and repair; and considerable experience as an automotive, truck and off-road equipment mechanic with a background in a/c and hydraulics, vehicle and equipment software systems; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
