ILLINOIS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY, DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY

ASSISTANT or ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR [SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY]

Illinois Wesleyan University invites applications for a tenure-track position in social psychology in the Department of Psychology at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Candidates should ideally have completed a Ph.D. in psychology by the start date of August 2025, although ABD will be considered for applicants who will complete their Ph.D. within a year following the start date. Salary and benefits are competitive.

Founded in 1850, Illinois Wesleyan University is a selective private undergraduate liberal arts university with approximately 1,600 students. We are located in Bloomington, IL, a metro area of 170,000 people, which is about a two-hour drive from Chicago and St. Louis. The Department of Psychology emphasizes quality teaching, experiential learning and student-faculty research collaboration. Illinois Wesleyan University is strongly committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive community of outstanding faculty, staff, and students (40% of our recent incoming class come from diverse backgrounds). Illinois Wesleyan University is an EEO Employer. Candidates from marginalized or underrepresented backgrounds are highly encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate psychology courses and courses that serve the larger IWU student population. The typical teaching load is three courses per semester (six per year). The successful candidate will also be expected to engage in research and other scholarly activities, provide academic advising to students, and participate in department, college, and university service. In addition, applicants should address potential contributions they can make to the University diversity initiative through their teaching, scholarship, and/or service.

Teaching responsibilities will include an introductory social psychology course, research methods and advanced seminars in the candidate’s area of expertise. Other departmental teaching needs include introductory psychology and courses focusing on gender and/or other areas of diversity. The ability to teach courses that contribute to the University general education and writing programs will also be highly valued. The specific research area within social psychology is open, but the applicant’s research program should be able to incorporate undergraduate students. Support for research is provided in the form of start-up funds, laboratory space, computer labs, and university research grants.

Review of complete applications will begin on October 15th; however, applications will be accepted until the position has been filled. To apply, submit the following to our Natural Science Division administrative specialist, Cressie Volz: psych@iwu.edu

  5. a diversity statement on your experiences with, strategies for, or commitment to inclusive teaching; and
