Job Summary

This position serves as a Design Lead for the Networking & TFM Team within the Infrastructure Operations & Networking department. The Technical Lead for the Data Communications Wiring Team is responsible for overseeing the design, installation, and maintenance of structured cabling systems that support the organization’s data and voice communications infrastructure. This role provides technical leadership and guidance to the wiring team, ensuring all projects meet industry standards, organizational requirements, and safety regulations. The Technical Lead collaborates closely with network engineers, facilities teams, and external vendors to deliver reliable connectivity across campus environments. In addition to managing day-to-day operations, this position drives continuous improvement initiatives, maintains accurate documentation, and ensures high-quality service delivery for mission-critical network infrastructure.

Infrastructure Operations & Networking (ION) manages the physical infrastructure for the campus, which includes the data centers, more than 250 network closets, cabling, server, virtualization, and storage infrastructure for the University along with offering communication and collaboration services in areas such as voice, Office365, and shared storage. ION also provides the necessary networking infrastructure and technical support rooms across campus to deliver these audio and video communication capabilities to campus.

Position Specific:
There is the potential for a hybrid work schedule in this position, within the state of Illinois. Illinois residency is required. Eligibility is based upon employee performance, appropriate remote working environment, and business needs.

Salary Rate / Pay Rate

$90,000 - $100,000 annual

Required Qualifications

  1. Fifteen years of experience working with:
    a. structured wiring infrastructure for data, voice, including copper, fiber and coaxial cable topologies, including patch panels and termination work.
    b. UPS technologies and power designs, fire suppression systems, AC, and data-center cable management designs.
  2. Experience working with an enterprise network and/or in an education environment.
  3. An understanding of a construction site, as it relates to structured wiring infrastructure and the ability to speak the language of the contractors.
  4. Knowledge of the following:
    a. digital and analog voice communications technology including panels and termination work.
    b. project management to coordinate many concurrent responsibilities; must be able to understand network drawings, cable plant drawings, as well as technical manuals and materials.
  5. The following skills and/or abilities:
    a. Ability to understand basic electronic schematics, cable plant drawings, engineering and architectural prints, as well as technical manuals and materials.
    b. Ability to work and communicate well with people.
    c. Ability to work in a collaborative team environment.
    d. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    e. Strong problem solving and analytic skills.
    f. Excellent customer service background; ability to reconcile escalated customer services issues and work in periods of high stress

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Excellent organizational and project management skills.
  2. Knowledge of desktop and network operating systems (Windows 11) and applications.
  3. Knowledge of cabling systems (STP, UTP, and fiber), protocol suites (TCP/IP), and architectures (Ethernet, etc.), and the corresponding hardware and software components (switches and routers).
  4. Knowledge of project management to coordinate many concurrent responsibilities

Work Hours

Core Hours: Generally normal business hours (8:00am - 4:30pm Monday through Friday); weekend or after-hours work may be required to support change management or disaster recovery.

Functional Expectations

Must be able to complete the following with or without a reasonable accommodation:

  1. Lift and carry equipment weighing 45 pounds and less.
  2. Close visual acuity to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small objects.

The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials and responses to the supplemental questions.
