Job Summary

Graduate Assistants in University College/Developmental Mathematics support the delivery, coordination, and continuous improvement of Developmental Mathematics academic support services. The Developmental Mathematics program includes professional staff, instructional faculty, graduate assistants, and undergraduate peer tutors who work collaboratively to support student success.
Developmental Mathematics Graduate Assistants provide supervision and contribute to the daily operations and program support for the Developmental Math Lab, working closely with professional staff in Curriculum Services and instructional faculty. This role involves participation in various supervisory, administrative, and assessment-related activities within a team-based environment.

Additional Information

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Assist in the coordination and daily operation of the Developmental Mathematics Lab, including maintaining a welcoming and student-centered learning environment.
2. Assist Curriculum Service full-time staff with the supervision, training, evaluation, and ongoing support of undergraduate tutors in the Developmental Math Lab
3. Complete administrative tasks, including tracking usage data and updating weekly tutor schedules as needed.
4. Provide academic support as appropriate, which may include tutoring students, grading student work, or supporting tutors with content-related questions.
5. Assist as needed with developing and facilitating workshops, review sessions, or learning activities focused on developmental mathematics strategies and student success skills.
6. Support instructional staff as appropriate, such as coordinating academic support initiatives.
7. Maintain confidentiality of student records.
8. Assess daily operations and provide suggestions to the full-time staff members.
9. All other duties as assigned or discussed with the Assistant Director or designated supervisor.

Salary Rate / Pay Rate

$1,510/month

Required Qualifications

1. Eligible for appointment as per the requirements in the Graduate Assistant Handbook which can be found at http://hr.illinoisstate.edu/downloads/GA_Handbook.pdf
2. All ISU requirements for Graduate Assistants must be met including full time enrollment (9 credit hours) in a master's or doctoral program.
3. Must be a degree-seeking graduate student at Illinois State University in one of the following areas:
Accounting
Economics
Mathematics
Teaching and Learning
Technology
STEM - Focused MBA
4. Interest in promoting academic achievement of students, mathematics understanding, and skill development
5. Interest in working with diverse student populations.
6. Sensitivity to the needs of developmental mathematics students.
7. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
8. General computer knowledge and competency.

Work Hours

20 hours per week, evening and limited weekend hours required

Illinois State University student employees are restricted to no more than 28 hours per week of on-campus employment for all positions held. International students are restricted by their visa status to no more than 20 hours per week of on-campus employment when the university is in session but may work up to 28 hours per week when the university is not in session.
