Reporting to a clinical associate and working under the direct supervision of a registered nurse and surgical technologist, the extern will follow the department policies, procedures, and professional standards of practice. The extern will assist with maintaining inventory, assisting in surgical procedures in the ORT role, maintaining cleanliness of the operating room, and maintenance of equipment and supplies. The extern can expect to strengthen clinical knowledge and experience in the surgical environment.

-Scrubs for cases according to established sterile procedures, by wearing sterile gown and gloves, and assisting surgeons with same.
-Assists the surgical technologist with setting up back table and mayo stand.
-Checks case cart, and prepares supplies/equipment utilizing preference cards to assemble all necessary supplies/equipment before patient arrives in room.
-Observes sterile technique of all personnel, assists in draping, and holds retraction devices.
-Cleans operating room and disposes of used case carts and instruments according to established procedures. Assists in returning supplies and equipment to proper storage; separates, cleans and prepares instruments as necessary, and so forth.
-Assists with circulating duties under the direct supervision of a registered nurse.
-Develops and maintains a positive working relationship with department and hospital personnel and outside agencies.
-Assist with transport of pre and post operative patients.
-Assist the circulating RN with positioning of the patient as directed by the surgeon.
-Transport blood and surgical specimens to the Laboratory.
-Assist with clean up procedure upon completion of the case.
-Assist with housekeeping as it pertains to the O.R.
-Supports and is involved in the continuous quality improvement efforts of the hospital to increase patient outcomes, increase patient satisfaction, and improve the utilization of the hospitals resources.

The compensation range for this position is $15per hour - $15per hour. This represents a good faith minimum and maximum range for the role at the time of posting by Carle Health. The actual compensation offered a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked and compensation model.
